I applied for a position at KCPR, but didn’t get it. Which is fine, actually. Part of the application was coming up with mixtape selections for Miss Piggy. Because all the hip kids are watching Muppet Show reruns right now.
I was particularly proud of this. I like creative writing.
Miss Piggy’s Mixtape
Bjork – Big Time Sensuality: Miss Piggy, remember your twenties, full of life, opportunity, and the ripe, young, naïve green frogs just begging to be seduced and educated by your sexual prowess? You were gonna be huge!
Lykke Li – Breaking It Up: Then you were on the verge of your thirties, and brief flirtations with success lifted you so high emotionally, and then dropped you back down on the concrete sidewalks. That frog was keeping you from living your life, you thought. It was time to start a new chapter.
Cat Power – Lived In Bars: You’re now encroaching on your forties, you’re too old to play the love interest, and too young for the public to start reminiscing on your glory days. Oh hell, what glory days!? Now you’re tempting men in dingy bars; all that smoky eye shadow doesn’t stand out against the cigarette fumes that permeate the air in this dank place. You wonder if they hire part-time bartenders. Oh fuck it, these hooves can’t hold a shot glass to save your life.
Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie – Joanna Newsom: This lumpy old recliner helps to numb it a little. That damn livestock veterinarian says your arthritis medication won’t help with the pain. You never thought you’d find yourself in this situation. Who the hell thought a pig would live past sixty!? You wonder what the hell Kermit is up to these days. You could give him a call, but you haven’t seen him since Statler and Waldorf’s funeral 13 years ago. There weren’t any snide remarks at that gathering. You glance toward the bookshelf. Next to the grossly underused English-French dictionary and that Pilates video your coworker Dianne lent you 7 months ago in the breakroom at the Des Moines DMV are a series of framed photographs: Kermit and you back in your Second City days in Chicago, a photo of Mom and Dad from their college years, and a candid photo of you reading a brochure in front of the Liberty Bell in Philidelphia in which you had thought made you look artful. A deep breath and you turn your head to look out the window at the abandoned corn field next to your house. Two black birds fight off a hawk that has trespassed upon their nest. The hum of a jet engine high overhead. You consider starting attendance at a church. How many days until Sunday?

MINUTE MOVIE REVIEWS #3 – Hamlet 2 August 30, 2008

Hamlet 2 (2008)
Steve Coogan stars as a deranged drama teacher who stages a controversial sequel to Shakespeare’s Hamlet in order to save the theater department from being cut due to school budget constrictions. The movie is very funny, very irreverent, and completely improbable. Fans of The Office, former high school drama nerds, and people who think a musical number called “Raped In The Face” would be completely fantastic will enjoy this movie. People who like political correctness, didn’t like Little Miss Sunshine, and can’t laugh at their own faith will find little to enjoy.
Hamlet 2 is one of those rare comedies that stays consistently funny throughout, and for that I give it five stars. Unfortunately, it does have some pacing problems, and an unnecessary voice over throughout, so I give it four stars instead.
4/5 stars
MINUTE MOVIE REVIEWS #2 – Paris, Je T’Aime August 28, 2008

PARIS JE T’AIME (2006)
This is a film made up of multiple short films about different people in Paris. If you speak French, or worship everything that comes out of Europe like a saintly relic, this movie is for you. The attraction here is that each of the 18 short films is created by a different director. More familiar names include Joel and Ethan Coen, Wes Craven, and Alfonso Cuaron. Actors that make appearances include Maggie Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Nick Nolte, Steve Buscemi, and Elijah Wood. The shorts range from bad to good, with a few really great ones. The bad include an artsy short about an Asian hair salon that only makes sense if you assume that the French director behind it is a pretentious asshole. Another bad one is a short about two vampires that not only doesn’t fit in with the others tone-wise, but the set that it’s filmed on is so generic they could have filmed it in Hungary instead of Paris for all I know. What a piece of shit. But beyond the couple ridiculous and Garden-State-bad shorts are some wonders, including the final short about an American postal worker on vacation from Denver who narrates a day in her trip to Paris in heavily accented French. It starts out funny, and is incredibly moving at the end. Even if everything was crap, I’d still recommend this film for that final short. I’d post the YouTube clip of it, but I don’t think that the short will still be as effective without the preceding 17 building up to it.
So it’s a fun trip.
4/5 stars.
MINUTE MOVIE REVIEWS #1 – Persepolis August 27, 2008

This starts a series of short reviews of films and TV shows that Jimmy watches. My RANDOM REVIEWS deal was just too broad to encompass all that I plan to review. So now we have Minute Movie Reviews.
PERSEPOLIS (2007)
Persepolis is an animated film about a girl, Marjane, who grows up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. The animation is fresh and original, but the story, even though it’s true, is often pretty trite, and plot points are brushed over too fast for me to invest in the character. And while I’m not socialist or anarchist, I can still enjoy watching films about characters who subscribe to these ideologies. The problem is why should I care about characters that don’t care about anything other than themselves? I don’t like selfish people, and when they are the protagonists, it’s hard for me to give a damn. The historical aspects of this film are fascinating, and heartbreaking, and there’s much to like in this film. But there’s also alot to gripe about.
3/5 stars.
RANDOM REVIEWS: Batman – Gotham Knight August 25, 2008

I was very excited to view Batman: Gotham Knight, the anthology of six anime shorts expanding Batman/Bruce Wayne’s backstory in today’s most exciting form of animation. I was prepared for it being as awesome as the Animatrix. Of which it wasn’t. And then again, the Animatrix wasn’t that great either.
Guess I’ll just watch Princess Mononoke again, or something.

Old Episode Execution July 25, 2008

So in case any of you were wondering, I’ve been hosting my podcast episodes at a website called Switchpod.com. It’s a shifty little website, and I think it’s probably rooted somewhere in the Siberian permafrost. I’m pretty sure some Russian nerd created the site on a whim one day, and then died, and the site continued to run.
I’ve basically overgrown my maximum storage space on the website’s FREE plan. And while I’m 6MB over what I’m allowed, and Episode 16 successfully downloaded to my computer, I’m presuming I’m in the clear. I will continue to upload episodes so long as they still let me to do so. But if the day comes where I have to axe an episode or two to fit a new one in, it may happen.
BUT DON’T WORRY! I’ll upload the old episodes on another hosting site, so people who want to check out the old stuff can download the episodes separate from the feed in iTunes.
So this was just a heads-up. Heads-up.
RANDOM REVIEW: Atonement July 12, 2008
Posted by jimmyandsomeotherpeople in Random Reviews.Tags: Atonement, James McAvoy, Keira Knightly, Random Review, Zodiac
1 comment so far
Atonement is not a bad movie, it’s actually fairly good. I just don’t know why it was nominated for Best Picture at this Oscars earlier this spring. The fault of the movie is that it suffers from what many dramas suffer from: stoic, impassionate characters. There was not a single character I cared about in this movie, because they’re all too busy being British to actually develop unique personalities. I know that Keira Knightly and James McAvoy are in love because they kiss and whisper sweet nothings to each other, but I don’t really care about their love. And this applies to an assortment of characters in the film. So the movie functions on the level of television drama, or perhaps one of those Masterpiece Theatre presentations, but not as an Oscar caliber picture.
So yes, some of you will actually enjoy this movie. But not those of you with standards.
Perhaps if Atonement hadn’t been nominated, a better picture, Zodiac, could have been nominated in its place. Oh well…
Oh, there is one redeeming scene, that almost made me give the film 3 stars over 2 at Netflix. It’s a continuous tracking shot of a make-shift military encampment in war-torn France that lasts over 5 minutes. It is an incredible piece of cinema, and very emotionally affecting. I’d almost recommend the film just for that five minutes. Incredible stuff.

HEART STATION – Utada Hikaru
New York-born Utada is pretty much Japan’s Imogen Heap, writing, singing, programming and layering all her songs herself. Previous videos have bordered on hallucinogenic fantasies and even been as plain as footage of her washing dishes. This video is on the conservative side, where she sings of lost love, and a desire to send her feelings out over the airwaves to communicate across the distance. Like the Madvillain video I just posted, this is another cleanly shot piece of work. Just enjoy the simplicity, and the emotion. Look forward for her second English-language album to drop late this year.
And try to ignore the crappy fan-made subtitles. Those are shit.

Madvillain – Accordion
This video is great, because it’s essentially the anti-hip-hop video. No bling, no champagne, no club. Just an empty, dark hallway. No DJ at the deck, just a guy on an accordion. Sure there’s a girl, but only one, and she’s not dancing on Madvillain, just in the background, nothing that could really be considered overtly sexual. And Madvillain doesn’t wear any visible bling, just shorts, a polo shirt. And the signature mask. It’s so simple, and completely badass. You respect and fear this man for his skill with words and flow, not wealth and gold.
On a side note, an MF DOOM (who produced the Madvillainy record) mask is spray painted outside below the windows of the Sandwich Factory windows. It’s awesome.
